Hibiscus Simple Syrup

Hibiscus simple syrup is a sugar syrup with tart and floral notes. Add it to your favorite drinks: mocktails, cocktails, and desserts or baked goods. This tea-infused syrup is easy to make and only requires two simple ingredients.

Ingredient Notes

  • Hibiscus tea – a red colored tea once brewed with a tangy, sour/tart, floral taste.
  • Organic cane sugar – my favorite type of sweetener to use. It isn’t super sweet and dissolves well, but you could also use white granulated sugar.
  • Water – to dissolve the sugar.

Make It Your Way: Substitutions & Variations

Please remember that recipes are just a starting point.

How can you make this hibiscus simple syrup recipe using what you already have? Here are some ideas…

  • No organic cane sugar? – use white sugar or honey.
  • No hibiscus tea bags? – you can also use loose leaf hibiscus tea.
  • Add-ins – orange peel or lemon peel, fresh ginger, etc.
  • If you have a gas stove, it’s important that you remove the loose tea from the tea bag and cook it directly in the simple syrup to prevent the strings from catching on fire.
  • You must use a fine granulated sugar. Raw sugar won’t work because the granules are too coarse and don’t dissolve as easily.
  • Using a dark sweetener such as maple syrup, brown sugar, or coconut sugar will alter the color of the syrup.
  • Store the homemade syrup in an airtight container or tightly sealed jar in the fridge for up to 3 weeks.

Serving Ideas

Hibiscus syrup can be used anywhere you’d use a liquid sweetener to sweeten something such as:

  • Mocktails – like my blood orange mocktail.
  • Cocktails – anywhere you want a tart, floral flavor. It’d be a great addition to margaritas or mojitos.
  • Baked goods – could pour over a loaf cake (like my lemon raspberry loaf) or drizzle over crispy waffles or fluffy pancakes.
  • Iced tea – add it to an iced matcha latte or enhance the flavor of iced tea.
