What You’ll Love About This Recipe
Ingredients
Here’s what you’ll need to make this simple blackberry syrup:
- Frozen or fresh blackberries – Both work well. If it’s blackberry season, use fresh fruit. If they’re out of season, opt for frozen blackberries. No need to thaw them first.
- Organic cane sugar – my favorite type of sweetener to use. It’s not as processed as white granulated sugar, isn’t sickly sweet, and dissolves well.
- Water – to dissolve the sugar.
How to Make Blackberry Simple Syrup: Step By Step
Here are some quick visual instructions. The full instructions and ingredient list will be in the printable recipe card below!
- Dissolve sugar. Heat the water and sugar in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Constantly stir until the sugar dissolves then add the blackberries.
- Simmer. Reduce to medium heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes (10 minutes if using fresh blackberries), stirring occasionally.
- Strain. Place a fine mesh strainer over a glass jar and pour the blackberry syrup through. Use the back of a spoon to gently press against the berries to help extract all the syrup. Don’t throw away the strained berries. Enjoy them on top of yogurt and granola, ice cream, or straight off the spoon. They’re so good!
- Cool and store. Let the syrup cool to room temperature before storing it in the fridge.
Helpful Tips
- For a sweeter syrup, increase the sugar-to-water ratio to equal parts sugar and water for a sweeter syrup.
- For a thicker syrup, blend the blackberries with the syrup, then strain out the seeds.
Quick Tip: If using fresh blackberries, use a fork or potato masher to mash the berries in the syrup. This will help release their juices into the syrup.
Storage
Fridge: Store the blackberry simple syrup in an airtight container or mason jar in the refrigerator. It will keep for up to two weeks.
Freezer: For longer storage, freeze the syrup in silicone ice cube trays, then transfer the frozen syrup cubes to a freezer-safe bag where they can last up to two months.
