Ingredients

Here’s what you’ll need to make this apple strawberry crumble:

Fruit base

  • Fresh strawberries
  • Apples – the type of apple is up to you.
  • Brown sugar
  • Potato starch or corn starch
  • Lemon juice
  • Ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt

Crumble topping

  • Old-fashioned oats – use certified gluten free oats if needed.

  • Vanilla extract

How to Make Strawberry Apple Crumble: Step By Step

Here are some quick visual instructions. The full instructions and ingredient list will be in the printable recipe card below!

1. Prep. Preheat the oven to 350ºF and grease an 8×8 or 9×9 baking pan or 9-inch pie dish.

2. Make the fruit mixture. Mix the sliced strawberries, apple slices, brown sugar, potato starch, lemon juice, ground cinnamon, and a pinch of salt in a large bowl until combined. Transfer the fruit filling to the prepared pan and spread into a somewhat even layer.

3. Make the buttery oat topping. In a medium bowl, combine the dry ingredients: oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Mix until combined, then stir in the melted butter and vanilla until the mixture forms clumps and has a sandy texture.

4. Add the crumbly topping. Sprinkle the crisp topping over the top of the fruit mixture. Bake for 45 minutes or until the strawberries have started to bubble up and the topping is golden brown. Allow to cool then top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream if desired.

Helpful Tips

  • If you prefer more of a sweet-tart flavor, use tart granny smith apples or golden delicious apples.
  • For fewer dishes, you can mix the fruit in your baking dish instead of a large mixing bowl.

Quick Tip: The fruit filling is roughly 7-8 cups if you decide to make this crumble with a different type of fruit.

Storage

Let cool to room temperature, then store leftover crisp in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days.

Make It Your Way: Substitutions & Variations

Please remember that recipes are just a starting point.

How can you make this easy apple strawberry crisp using what you already have? Here are some ideas…

  • No brown sugar? – use coconut sugar or white sugar.
  • No vegan butter? – you can also use melted coconut oil or even olive oil.
  • Variations – make my blackberry and apple crumble or apple and blueberry crumble, or use a different fruit depending on what’s in season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do some fruit crumble recipes call for melted butter and some call for cold butter?

Either one will work, but some believe that melted butter helps hydrate the flour better which leads to a crispier topping.

Is a crumble the same as a crisp?

Crumbles are more widely associated with the UK, whereas crisps are a popular dessert in the United States.

Both use a combination of flour, sugar, and butter for the crumbly streusel-like topping. Crisps also use oats in the topping, but you’ll find some crumble recipes do too (like this one).
