Make It Your Way: Substitutions & Variations

Please remember that recipes are just a starting point.

How can you make this healthy salad dressing using what you already have? Here are some ideas…

  • No rice vinegar? – use white wine vinegar or champagne vinegar for a similarly mild flavor. Apple cider vinegar is a bit strong but can work and lime juice or lemon juice will also work in a pinch.
  • No honey? – you can also use maple syrup but it’ll change the flavor of the dressing. Maple syrup isn’t as emollient as honey, so you may need to add a squeeze of Dijon mustard to help the dressing emulsify.
  • No fresh ginger? – you can also use ginger paste from a tube or jar but don’t use ground ginger.
  • No white pepper? – black pepper is fine.
  • Add-ins – a tablespoon of reduced sodium soy sauce or tamari or a splash of toasted sesame oil for a slightly different flavor profile.

How To Use

Serve on leafy green salads, roasted vegetables, and various types of vegetable salads such as bell pepper cucumber salad, beetroot and feta salad, or even pasta salad.

It would be incredible on bowls such as smoked salmon poke bowls or dragon bowls. You can also use it as a marinade for chicken or shrimp. It can really go with just about anything.
